A few weeks ago, I went to visit my mom at her house near Atlanta before they moved back to the Upstate. So, I packed up the girls and off we went. I expected to spend a few days just relaxing and enjoying Mom’s company, which I did. But I, also, learned a few things as well about Mom and about myself.
One of the first things I learned about Mom was that she has been driving a neighbor to the grocery store once a week every week for a while. The lady doesn’t have a car so Mom offered to drive her. I think, they go to a few stores and maybe run a few errands, but I thought it was a really small, yet big thing to do for someone. They have lived there for less than a year, but Mom had met this lady, seen a need, and was taking care of it.
Another thing I witnessed happened when we went to a consignment shop. While we were there, a lady walked in that was talking to the owner. She was telling the owner that she just found out she had shingles. Mom immediately jumped in the conversation, telling the lady how sorry she was and listening to her tale. Mom had never met this lady, but she showed genuine concern for her.
These two things I witnessed taught me a few things about myself. I always use the excuse that I’m not a people person. I don’t like talking to people… I would rather be behind the scenes…. I would rather just be left alone for the most part. These are all things that I must constantly fight myself over. Being a follower of Jesus is about making disciples and making disciples is about relationships…. which means I can’t hide myself from people. I need to ask questions, to listen to them intently and with genuineness, to build a relationship. I have problems with these things… and being at Mom’s made me realize that I am still thinking more about myself and my comfort than about Jesus and about what He would have me to do.
Anyway, I said all of this to say: Mom, I’m really proud of you and of what you do for other people. You constantly seek to help people. You are genuinely concerned about other people and their problems. You try to find out how you can help and then you do it. Thanks for all you do and I hope you have a Happy Mother’s Day!

Melanie, it is 10:00 p.m. at nite and I just read this……..you made me cry , this was one of the best Mother’s Day presents anyone could give a mother. “Thanks for noticing.” I love you very much as I love all my children. Everyone of my children our special and unique in their own way. And you are special. You have so many other gifts so don’t beat yourself up. We all can work on areas of our lives. And I have some areas I definitely need to work on. You have sooo many gifts that God has blessed you with. Have a Blessed Mom’s Day! You have 2 lovely children and you are a great Mom!
